The Scouting Report

In her 13th season as head coach at Iowa, Lisa Bluder leads the Hawkeyes’ women’s team as they pursue their 12th postseason appearance in 13 years. Senior center Morgan Johnson enters her final season hot off a junior campaign in which she set a school record for blocks and posted double-digit points in 24 of 31 games. The first 500 fans in attendance on January 6 receive free trading cards, which the players can sign or bend all out of shape themselves during postgame autograph sessions.

On December 22, the Hawkeyes’ men’s team looks to snuff out the Coppin State Eagles under the guidance of third-year head coach Fran McCaffery. The current roster includes junior forward Melsahn Basabe, who in early 2011 became the first Big Ten player in more than 15 years to achieve at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks in a single game.

The women’s and men’s showdowns take place in the newly renovated Carver-Hawkeye Arena, one of the largest university-owned facilities in the country. A competitive boon for its home teams, the arena has granted the basketball teams a lifetime 78% winning percentage and enough room to build a Gatorade wave pool.
