On July 12–14, the Irish Fest celebrates all things Hibernian. A smorgasbord of family activities includes step dancing, children's singing contests, a mashed potato-eating competition, and folk tents loaded with dances and sing-alongs. After tuckering themselves out, guests take in this year's staggering musical lineup of local and international acts. Featured performers include Celtic rockers The Tossers, Kevin Flynn and the Avondale Ramblers, and The Killdares, alongside traditional acts such as Enter the Haggis and The Dooley Brothers. While celebrating, of-age participants can redeem drink tickets for Irish brews (5 tickets for most drinks; 6 for Guinness).
Irish American Heritage Center
Occupying a building that sprang up at the turn of the 20th century, the Irish American Heritage Center (IAHC) somehow manages to cram Ireland into one of Chicago’s city blocks. Work from Irish artists hangs in the building’s art gallery, books from Irish authors fill its library, Irish plays light up its 658-seat theater, and Irish food and drinks delight the crowd on the main floor at the Fifth Province Pub. The IAHC also has a knowledgeable staff of instructors, who teach classes on everything from Irish dance and music to Irish language and genealogy.
What some people are buzzing about:
“Beautiful building and great entertainment!”
