Most people have been to a Beatles concert … in Fantasyland. The Beatles, arguably history’s most famous rock ‘n’ roll band, haven’t played a live show since their surprise “Let it Be” rooftop concert in 1969. Barring time travel or a mirage in the deserts of Liverpool, the best that fans can do now is to celebrate the unforgettable music the iconic group left behind. At the 10-hour Danbury Fields Forever Beatles Music Festival, 10 bands pay tribute to The Fab Four’s oeuvre as listeners chime in from beach chairs and blankets. Acts from around the world inhabit all the band’s looks and hooks throughout the daylong magical mystery tour, with each performance representing a different chapter of Beatles lore.
New York sitar player Roger Lipson starts the festival by plucking Indian strings reminiscent of those that underscored The Beatles’ hippie period with Ravi Shankar, and Genetic Control reintroduces ears to the band’s psychedelic era, which birthed the notoriously trippy “I Am the Walrus.” Mersey Beat Mania recalls the band’s more innocent mop-top days with period costumes and vintage instruments. The festival also tips its hat to Beatles’ solo careers, with One Sweet Dream’s spot-on impersonation of Paul McCartney and Carlo Cantamessa’s uncanny performance as John Lennon.
