The Concerts

  • Porgy and Bess: George Gershwin’s folk opera about the love between a disabled beggar and a misunderstood young woman weaves jazzy hits including “Summertime” and “I Loves You, Porgy” into a riveting plot—here suggested, though not fully staged, with help from guests Gordon Hawkins and Laquita Mitchell in the title roles.
  • Fidelity National Financial Pops Series: Pops In Love: On the eve of Valentine’s Day, the orchestra joins forces with guest vocalists to pay homage to romance with rapturous music from Gone With the Wind, West Side Story, and Phantom of the Opera.
  • Garrison Keillor: The creator of A Prairie Home Companion, who’s earned a Grammy Award for his audiobook of Lake Wobegon Days and an induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame for his hard-hitting reporting on small-town news, lends his deep, unhurried drawl to another batch of Minnesota stories while a small ensemble of musicians adds color.
  • Florida Blue Masterworks Series: Gershwin—Concerto in F: Young Gershwin created this wholly original work by combining the traditional structure and mood of a Russian concerto with his affinity for blues, jazz, and ragtime.

Jacksonville Symphony

The Jacksonville Symphony held its first concert in 1950. Tickets were $1 each. Although inflation has taken its course in the half-century since, the Jacksonville Symphony has kept an eye on accessibility. They've partnered with entertainers ranging from Jack Benny (back in 1970) to Luciano Pavarotti to popular adult-contemporary musicians such as Jim Brickman. Each year, they give tens of thousands of schoolchildren the chance to participate in youth-oriented symphony events. And for music-lovers who can't make it to the JSO's dedicated venue, the highly harmonious Robert E. Jacoby Symphony Hall, there are Monday-night radio broadcasts.
