A Moon for the Misbegotten

  • The Plot: In a a dilapidated Connecticut house, a bad joke spirals its three damaged inhabitants into a nightmare of blackmail, seduction, and alcoholic despair (it is a Eugene O’Neill play, after all)
  • The Characters: Devious tenant-farmer father Phil Hogan; his sharp-tongued daughter Josie; and James Tyrone, Jr., who has been sent into a tailspin by the death of his mother since his last appearance in O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night
  • The Praise: A Moon for the Misbegotten risks being overshadowed by the two masterworks that bookend it (Long Day’s Journey and The Iceman Cometh). But The Los Angeles Times believes the play “shows the mature O’Neill at the height of his powers — his arty experimental theater days behind him, masterfully employing classical fundamentals to wring hauntingly poetic truths about love and self-delusion from gritty everyday experience.”
