Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Spectacular
Since Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar was released as a rock-opera concept album chronicling the last week of Jesus’ life, it’s become one of Billboard’s biggest-selling records, a fully staged musical on Broadway and the West End, and a 1973 film. But Webber never forgot its first live performance as a rock concert in 1971. “I, personally, have always hankered after seeing it again in the arenas where it started.”
With the Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Spectacular, Sir Andrew gets his wish on a colossal scale. The stage measures almost 4,000 square feet and is backdropped by a high-definition screen measuring 60 feet wide. The sound system and lighting effects have been customized to rattle every seat in the arena while bathing audiences in the colors of 2.21 million LED lights.
The extravagance of the production is matched by the vocal pyrotechnics on display. Broadway veteran Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child tackles the role of Mary Magdalene, lending her soulful pipes to “Everything’s Alright” and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” But Williams isn’t alone in musical prowess. Incubus’ Brandon Boyd and *NSync’s JC Chasez bring their dynamic vocal ranges to the morally conflicted roles of Judas Iscariot and Pontius Pilate, respectively. Rounding out the star-studded cast, legendary rocker John Rotten Lydon of Public Image LTD (PiL) and the Sex Pistols fame takes on the role of the hedonistic King Herod.
Despite the roster of music-industry giants, the titular superstar is played by a newcomer—Ben Forster, who won the role of Jesus through the British television show Superstar, produced by Webber himself. Competing against thousands of other hopefuls and their canaries, Forster’s victory landed him on the U.K and Australia tours of the show, where he electrified more than 315,000 people. Now, he’s joined by a new cast of over 50 actors and musicians to bring a spectacle hailed as “a work of conceptual genius” by The Daily Telegraph to American audiences.
