Jewel – “Foolish Games” (Live 2013)
“My dad is a good performer. He taught me not to use a set list, but instead just to read the crowd,” Jewel Kilcher says on her website, relating a childhood spent singing with her father in Alaskan bars. In a career that’s been defined by her striking origin story—from hardscrabble frontier childhood to busking across the country as a teen to chart success that came on the heels of a period of living in her car—Jewel’s new tour is in many ways a return to the performing style of her earliest days. Early dates have found her leaning at least as much on audience requests as on prepared set lists (aided by a hefty tome of lyrics beside her onstage) and digressing into stories that vividly illustrate how the songs arose from a decade of pulling herself up by her guitar strap.
No matter what’s shouted from the audience, fans should expect to revel in plenty of tracks from 1995 album Pieces of You, still one of the best-selling debut albums of all time. It also forms the soaring heart of her just-released Greatest Hits collection, but Jewel’s lilting soprano has skipped across a variety of genres in the years since: the electronic beats of 2003 single “Intuition,” a children’s album, and, most recently, straight-ahead country, to name a few. Displaying the glowing warmth of a fireplace packed with fireflies in concert, she celebrates the success of her rich career while nodding at her roots by sharing her trademark yodeling from time to time.
