Kind words indeed for the group that once proclaimed words to be “very unnecessary” in their global hit “Enjoy the Silence.” Although critical focus tends to trumpet their murky synthesizers and machinist beats, the music of Depeche Mode is anti-robotic. It’s absolutely humanist, from the sing-along exuberance of “People Are People” to the indelible surf-guitar lure of “Personal Jesus.” After 30 years and more than 100 million albums sold throughout the globe, the core group of singer Dave Gahan; keyboardist and bassist Andy Fletcher; and chief songwriter, guitarist, and synth guru Martin Gore continues to fuel one of pop music’s most well-oiled machines.
Per the name of their 13th studio album, Delta Machine, the band adds a bit more blues to their sound.
