The Joffrey Ballet’s Othello
In a reprisal of its 2009 production of Othello, described by Splash magazines as “powerful, haunting, surreal, and complex,” The Joffrey Ballet closes its 2012–2013 season with the tale of deceit and violence. In this visual interpretation of the classic Shakespearean play, the choreography of Lar Lubovitch stands in for iambic dialogue as Iago plots to unravel the life of the Moorish general, Othello. The two find themselves often locked in enigmatic dance and violent embraces as Iago feeds Othello venomous lies about the hero’s wife, Desdemona, trying to convince him that she’s having an affair and secretly hates the macaroni picture he made her for their anniversary. The score, composed by the award-winning Elliot B. Goldenthal, mutates from standard rhythms to chaotic cacophonies as Iago’s betrayal deepens, culminating in the brutal climax. <p>
