Although it’s the house band at the legendary New York jazz club that welcomed greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker, the Birdland Big Band doesn’t confine its inspiration to the borders of its hometown. Led by the furious rhythms and propulsive grooves of famed drummer Tommy Igoe, the 15-piece outfit searches out toe-tapping compositions from around the world. On the band’s set lists, tunes from Duke Ellington and Chick Corea mix with works from Broadway musicals, Latin America, and wherever Randy Newman’s from.
The band released its most recent album, Eleven, to critical acclaim in late 2011, but it’s onstage that the musicians’ intense energy is most apparent as furrowed brows compete with gleeful grins. As the Wall Street Journal recently wrote, “No matter what the time signature or the rhythmic mode, nearly everything the Birdland Big Band plays is loud, fast and exciting.”
