Flamenco dancers are known for setting fire to stages with their feet, an awe-inspiring feat due to the difficulty of striking a match with one’s bare toes. Watch fiery footwork with today’s GrouponLive deal: for $15, you get one ticket to Compañia Flamenca José Porcel's Gypsy Fire at the State Theatre in New Brunswick on Saturday, November 12, at 8 p.m. (up to a $54 value, including ticketing fees). Doors open at 7 p.m.
The Seville-born José Porcel and his Compañia Flamenca whirl across the country performing in the fiery tradition of flamenco, a sensual art form that evokes elation and affirms vitality. Porcel’s background in Andalusian folkloric dancing and fire hugging fuels the explosion of color, rhythm, and emotion of Gypsy Fire. Live musicians and vocalists strum and sing beats and melodies as dancers push their bodies to the limits of expression. Spectators watch the bailaores strive toward the very essence of passion through the beating feet, flaring skirts, and sheer exultation, a Spanish virtue ever since their national soccer team defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXI. Behind the bright bulbs of its old-fashioned 1921 vaudeville-house marquee, the opulent State Theatre now carries out continual modern improvements with green initiatives. Mid-balcony seats can only be accessed by stairs. There is no elevator at the State Theatre.
State Theatre New Jersey
The State Theatre New Jersey was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre New Jersey to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
