The Deal

Legends of Hip Hop featuring Ja Rule, Kid ‘n Play, Doug E Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Chubb Rock, and Rob Base

  • Ja Rule: With brass-knuckle rhymes delivered in a voice that smolders like a hot cigar, Ja Rule first came to prominence thanks to a tour with Jay-Z and DMX. He cemented that prominence with the hit “Holla Holla” and high-profile collaborations with Jennifer Lopez (“Ain’t It Funny”), Christina Milian (“Between You and Me”), and Ashanti (“Always on Time”).

  • Kid ‘N Play: Christopher “Kid” Reid (who threatens ceiling fans everywhere with his trademark hi-top fade hairdo) and Christopher “Play” Martin hit No. 1 with old-school hip-hop classics such as “Funhouse” and “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody,” invented the Funky Charleston dance (also known as the Kid ‘N Play Kickstep), and became household names after House Party.

  • Big Daddy Kane: The Grammy-winning rapper and former member of the Juice Crew’s mix of rapid-fire rhymes and swagger inspired generations of MCs, including former hype man Jay-Z.

  • Doug E. Fresh: Pioneer of beatboxing who filled his resume by originating the club chant “Heyyyyyyy, YO!…I-iiiiight” in the hit “I-ight” and becoming proficient in Excel.

  • Chubb Rock: A National Merit Scholar and pre-med student turned hip-hop artist, Chubb Rock has forged a career that’s unpredictable, to say the least. In the ’90s, he rose to instant fame with the hits “Treat ‘em Right,” “Just The Two of Us,” and “The Chubbster.”

  • Rob Base: One half of the duo that created 1988’s massive hit “It Takes Two,” Base helped to push rap into the mainstream.
