Mummenschanz
Ordinary objects come to extraordinary life in the hands of the members of Mummenschanz. For four decades, the Swiss physical theatre company has used household items, masks, and absolutely no vocals at all to build otherworldly creatures from the ground up—a piece of tubing becomes a giant worm; a cluster of toilet-paper rolls turns one artist’s face into that of a wide-eyed alien being. With such playful innovation at the troupe’s core, it’s no surprise that Jim Henson personally selected them to close out the first season of The Muppet Show back in 1976. And their creativity hasn’t faltered over the years. As The New York Times noted, “if the troupe hasn’t changed, the world has; now the show is particularly vital to young audiences who’ve been raised on beeping gadgets and headphones, and rarely experience the extraordinary power of silence.”
