Formell y Los Van Van

  • How you met Los Van Van: in 1969, with the late, legendary singer Juan Formell as a frontman
  • How you’ll see them in August: much the same, but with Juan’s son Samuel slipping into his father’s dance shoes
  • What you’ll hear: the music that shaped the genre of “songo,” an Afro-cuban mishmash of rock, jazz, Brazilian music, and funk

Tito Rojas: Los 40 Del Gallo with Puerto Rican Power

  • How you might know Tito Rojas: as El Gallo Salsero, a title he started earning in 1975 singing with the Conjunto Borincuba
  • How El Gallo met Puerto Rican Power: in 1983, when he came onboard the orchestra as lead singer, changing the face of Puerto Rican salsa forever
  • Who else is joining this reunion: Luisito Ayala, the ensemble’s longtime trumpet player and band leader

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts hosts a lot of firsts. From Jose Feliciano to Russian music institutions, many performing artists have never played in the Bronx before they come to the Center. That reality is part of what prompted its founding in the first place three decades ago, in an effort to prove that borough residents didn't have to travel to Manhattan or tunnel inside their television sets to experience diverse, live cultural programming. So far, that's included concerts by luminaries such as Smokey Robinson, Patti LaBelle, and Johnny Mathis in addition to folk dance, ballet, and Latino comedy showcases.
