Chicago’s lePercolateur—whom the Chicago Examiner calls a "a sly and surprising gypsy-jazz quintet"—blows bubbles of swingtime bliss with unbridled energy and irresistible hooks. Springboarding off a platform of manouche jazz and Django Reinhardt–inspired club swing, the band evokes 1930s France with help from the vocal textures of Candace Washburn, whose playful and seductive croon steals hearts like a shoplifter in a Hallmark store. The toe-tapping combination of Stacy McMichael’s upright bass, the dueling-auctioneer fretting of guitarists Sam Random and Kevin Rush, and Marielle de Rocca-Serra’s twisting violin melodies led to the band being signed to esteemed local label Chicago Sessions, who unleashed their 2013 debut album Pop Manouche. In addition to a CD of their tunes and a reason to dance, this show gives fans a chance to see a one-time reunion with Marielle de Rocca-Serra, who has since percolated to other projects.
