Lips Together, Teeth Apart
Sally, her husband Sam, his sister Chloe, and Chloe’s husband John, head to a beach house on Fire Island to celebrate the Fourth of July. Sally inherited the house from her brother, who passed away from AIDS, and the cloud of mortality hangs over the couples as the weekend unfolds. As old wounds are reopened and personalities clash, each character delivers monologues about their own feelings of isolation, both as straight individuals in a gay community and as people who feel adrift in the larger world. The comedic drama by renowned playwright Terrence McNally first debuted Off-Broadway in 1991, earning an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award for original actress Christine Baranski. The Second Stage Theatre production stars America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) and Michael Chernus and Tracee Chimo (“Orange Is the New Black”).
Second Stage Theatre
Originally founded in 1979 to give a second chance to plays suffering from abbreviated runs, Second Stage Theatre has grown into one of Off-Broadway’s most distinguished companies. That success is built upon one simple idea: to bring contemporary American plays to life. This approach has lead to collaborations with talents including Stephen Sondheim, Brian Yorkey, and Mary Zimmerman. The company encourages up-and-coming playwrights and directors as well, through The Second Stage Theatre Uptown series and the Van Lier Fellowship program. Over the past few decades, Second Stage’s mix of fresh premieres and thoughtful remounts have earned it dozens of prestigious accolades, including six Tony Awards, 27 Obie Awards, and 12 Drama Desk Awards.
