A cast of globetrotting opera stars takes the lead in Vincenzo Bellini’s celebrated opera semiseria, La Sonnambula, or “The Sleepwalker.” Amina, the titular night wanderer, is portrayed by Eglise Guitérrez—who originally performed the opera at the Royal Opera House—opposite René Barbera in the role of Elvino. Backed by lightly plucked strings and breathy woodwinds, Elvino grandly proposes their marriage during “Prendi, l’anel ti dono,” but the pairing soon sours when Amina is found asleep in the room of newcomer Rodolfo (Ben Wager). Unable to convince Elvino that she merely sleepwalked in, Amina flies into the aria “Ah! non credea mirarti,” mourning her brief love with soaring, delicate notes.
Concert opera puts the art form's music front and center, with no sets, costumes, and rarely even a prop to distract the eye. WCO has staged more than 40 operas in this format since its founding in 1986, with a special emphasis on rarely performed pieces.
