The Goshen Fairgrounds’ twin dance floors burst to life Friday night, with a professional troupe teaching the steps of swing in preparation for the evening’s toe-tapping concerts. Presiding over the inaugural dance, The Four Freshmen balance four-part cool jazz instrumentals with intricate barbershop vocals. A live auction for jazz memorabilia follows, before Grammy-winning headliners Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks zip through their swinging, Dixie-flavored specialties heard on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and the film Public Enemies. To round out a subtle Boardwalk Empire milieu, Dominic Chianese will be in attendance, known from his role in the second season as retired alderman Leander Whitlock and the role of Uncle Junior on HBO’s The Sopranos.
The dance floors don’t close until the weekend finishes, and as adults boogie away on Saturday and Sunday, kids’ activities invite knee-high hepcats to clang on percussion instruments, dance away under supervision, and paint their faces with hip butterflies or free-form musical notation. While children sport make-believe sunglasses and fedoras, the musical acts keep it real from start to finish, from the boisterous squeal of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on Saturday night to the Nutella-smooth bass and downtempo musical musings of Kevin Mahogany and Dave Stryker’s Kansas City Swing that closes Sunday.
