BNP Paribas Showdown
With 17 Grand Slam titles to his name, Roger Federer has already cemented himself as one of, if not the greatest tennis player of all time. At the 8th annual BNP Paribas Showdown on March 10, he’ll square off against Grigor Dimitrov, a rising star who is frequently compared to—who else?—Roger Federer. Dimitrov welcomes the comparison, calling Federer his idol. The two have met on the court once before in Basel, Switzerland, where Federer topped the young hopeful in a quarterfinal match. Now, Dimitrov will have his shot at revenge.
Before those two charge into the Garden or emerge from a couple of giant tennis balls hanging from the rafters, an opening match between Monica Seles and Gabriela Sabatini will set the tone for the evening. Legends in their own right, Seles and Sabatini will be commemorating the 25th anniversary of their epic WTA Finals five-set match—the first five-set women’s match ever. Though just 16 at the time, Seles emerged victorious from that iconic showdown.
