What You'll Do

If you were one of New York's elite during the early 20th century, it's likely that you'd be living in a palatial mansion on the the Gold Coast—it's also likely that scenes from The Great Gatsby wouldn't be too far off from everyday life. Meet historian and curator Marianne Howard on the Long Island grounds of Gilded-Age mansion Coe Hall—designed by Walker & Gillette in 1918—to learn about the careful planning and work that went into the surrounding landscape's alluring elegance. Heading inside, you'll stroll from room to room as Marianne offers insight to the Coe family's daily routine and that of the 30 full-time servants whose constant activity kept the house running.

  • Walk Through Lavish Gardens
Take in the mansion's surrounding landscapes, whose verdant undulations are maintained as an arboretum and a state park

  • Tour a Gilded-Age Mansion
Step into the kind of home Fitzgerald envisioned when he wrote The Great Gatsby, learning about the luxurious lives of the Coe family

  • Hear Tales of Early 20th Century's Elites
Marianne offers insight into the mansion's little-known features and tells anecdotes about the American aristocracy that lived nearby
