For Mama, the immigrant matriarch of the colorful Jewish family in Marty’s Back in Town, 1950s Brownsville, Brooklyn, is more akin to a battlefield. It’s not enough that squalid tenement housing, a Jewish ghetto in itself, requires her to fight for her children’s survival; she also has to deal with the dysfunctions of her own kin. With the backstory of this biting yet touching production set, the script jumps ahead to the 1980s, where the children have ascended to the upper crust of Manhattan’s Park Avenue. Though their station has improved, some things never change, which becomes clear when the black sheep of the family makes his return to wreak havoc. Penned and produced by Moorestown resident Norman Shabel, this theatrical world premiere features Sylvia Kauders as Mama, who has appeared in such movies as The Wrestler and Witness.
