What You'll Get

Like practicing the piano while leg pressing another piano, martial arts help develop strength and discipline simultaneously. See martial artists bolster bodies and minds with this deal to see the Shaolin Warriors at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. For $15, you get one ticket valid for select seating in the balcony or orchestra – based on availability – on Friday, November 30, at 7:30 p.m. (up to a $35 value, including all fees). Doors open at 7 p.m.

In a monastery at the base of Mount Shaoshi in central China, 20 Shaolin monks practice martial arts for five to six hours a day. They have trained in physical and mental disciplines from a young age, allowing them to perform fantastic feats such as lying on spikes and sitting through a Ken Burns documentary. During a globetrotting kung fu spectacle, they demonstrate the ways of their temple to audiences of all ages through a day-in-the-life performance. The serenity of traditional morning meditation and chanting transforms gradually into something far more vigorous. The ensuing show of acrobatic, defensive fighting choreography often supplements the monks’ physical discipline with staffs, axes, and daggers.<p>

Mayo Performing Arts Center

During Hollywood’s Golden Age, The Community Theatre was the crowning achievement of Walter Reade’s chain of New Jersey movie palaces. By the 1980s, after five decades of movie screenings and catastrophic popcorn wars, the theater sat in disrepair. Concerned citizens banded together in 1994 to save the historic building from a sad end, and in May 2011, after a series of renovations, the theater officially changed its name to the Mayo Performing Arts Center. The venue currently hosts more than 200 performances a year, occasional art showings, and performance-arts education classes for adults and children.

About Mayo Performing Arts Center

The Mayo Performing Arts Center straddles time. While one foot is planted in the old-fashioned charm of the 1930s movie-palace golden age, the other is firmly in the tech-savvy modern day. Between is a stretch of history that saw the theater fall into disrepair and then resurrect itself to its star-studded heyday thanks to volunteers. Since its 1994 rebirth, the center has welcomed everyone from the Kirov Orchestra of St. Petersburg to Ringo Starr and Aretha Franklin. But, if the Mayo Center were a tripod, its third foot would certainly reach toward the future—a suite of education studios is on site to cultivate the next generation of performers.
