Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band
Most percussionists are all wrists and arms. But the beats of Poncho Sanchez spring from every fingertip. Although he's a human encyclopedia of Afro-Cuban jazz and a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who could churn funk from a hurdy-gurdy, it's Poncho's prowess with the conga drum that has kept him in demand for decades. His skills have led to inclusion in the Concord jazz Heritage Series and a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2000. Aesthetically, his sound harkens to Latin and bebop jazz greats such as Tito Puente, Chano Pozo, and Dizzy Gillespie, but his music also has dashes of James Brown and Wilson Pickett, as well as jazz legends like John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Backed by his swinging band, Poncho crosses several borders in his world music concert, which might include timbale-tipping salutes to Chano Pozo and Gillespie heard on his most recent album, Chano y Dizzy!
Preserve. Present. Promote. These three p's comprise the mission of The Manchester Craftsmen Guild, also known as MCG Jazz. Since 1987, MCG has fortified the musical community of Pittsburgh. In addition to drawing in the nation's most renowned jazz artists, they nurture culture for later generations by archiving their shows on their own record label. Past appearances have included greats such as Stanley Turrentine, Joe Williams, and even Dizzy Gillespie.
