MEAC/SWAC Challenge

For the ninth year in a row, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge steadies a spotlight over historically black colleges and universities, pitting the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference against the Southwestern Athletic Conference in a gridiron clash for conference supremacy. Representing the MEAC—which has won six of the event’s first eight games—the Florida A&M University Rattlers look to build on their conference’s success in the contest. Though the Rattlers have beaten Mississippi Valley State in their two previous meetings, those games took place in 1987 and 1990, back when NCAA football was still played on trampolines.

A full schedule packs events in around the game, including a pep rally on Saturday, a praise service on Sunday morning, and The Great Heart & Soul Tailgate at McCracken Field prior to kickoff. There, fans can avoid the pressure of creating their own pregame rituals and instead enjoy the established traditions of live music, cook-offs, food exhibits, and more. The festive atmosphere continues at halftime of the game and right after the final whistle, as both school bands spar note for note during Battle of the Bands performances.
