The Scouting Report

With last season’s rash of bad-luck injuries squarely in their rearview mirror, the Marlins charge into the 2016 season stocked with more than enough talent to make a splash in the NL East. The team’s roster is rife with high-caliber pitchers and sluggers—here are a few to keep an eye on as the new season begins:

  • José Fernandez: Fernandez spent much of 2015 recovering from Tommy John surgery, but his late-season return showed a lot of promise. In that stretch, he went 6-1 with a 2.92 ERA, proving that he still has what it takes to be the Marlins’ ace.

  • Giancarlo Stanton: Before he broke his left hamate bone last June, Stanton was dominating the MLB. He bowed out with a league-leading 27 home runs and 67 RBIs in less than half of a season, and now looks to pick up where he left off.

  • Dee Gordon: Gordon comes off a landmark season in which he won a batting title, a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger award, and hopefully, keys to a new trophy case for all that hardware. His unmatched speed promises to keep Miami’s offense in motion.

Miami Marlins

The Marlins take the field at Marlins Park: a LEED Gold certified 36,000-seat facility equipped with a retractable roof, fish tanks behind home plate, and a vibrant sculpture in left-center field that kicks into motion for Marlins home runs. Born in 1993, the Florida Marlins quickly established themselves as contenders in the National League, taking home World Series titles in 1997 and 2003. Today, after some light rebranding to go along with the new ballpark, the rechristened Miami Marlins aim to continue traditions new and old.
