Mike Birbiglia

Mike Birbiglia has been a storytelling fixture in the standup world since his Comedy Central specials and albums, such as Two Drink Mike and My Secret Public Journal Live, started earning critics’ rave reviews. A medically diagnosed somnambulist who wears mittens to bed, Birbiglia wrote and starred in a one-man show called Sleepwalk with Me, which premiered off-Broadway in 2008. Those rolling in the aisles included one Ira Glass, who after featuring Birbiglia on multiple This American Life episodes co-produced a star-studded film adaptation of the work. Since then, Birbiglia has continued to release critically acclaimed comedy albums, begun serving as a panelist on Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!, and embarked on his brand new tour Thank God for Jokes.

Kalamazoo State Theatre

“Save the State”: that was the rallying cry in Kalamazoo in 1982, as local arts groups and city officials spearheaded efforts to save the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre from demolition. And it was more than just a building the community sought to save. Since it first illuminated its marquee in 1927, the State Theatre had hosted countless vaudeville acts, operas, big bands, and bands with tiny drums, and had served as a cultural fixture for the city. Fortunately, the campaign worked. The venue was purchased in 1985, and after undergoing renovations, the State Theatre once again began housing entertainment ranging from rock concerts to live comedy for the citizens of Kalamazoo.
