The Miles Davis Experience: 1949–1959 transports guests to the era of cool jazz and beat poetry by pairing Blue Note Records' Miles Davis archives with live performances by acclaimed jazz musician Ambrose Akinmusire. Winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, Akinmusire has drawn praise from the L.A. Times for his own Blue Note debut, When the Heart Emerges Glistening, and his ability to recreate the tone, timbre, and strawberry scent of Davis's jam sessions. As Akinmusire performs Miles's music with a trumpet and a four-piece jazz combo, Donald Lacy — inspired by famous beat poets — teams photos and film clips with words that echo the syncopated rhythms of bebop jazz. A story of post-WWII America emerges from the collage, expanding audience members' understanding of Davis's musical innovations, the civil-rights struggle, and the unlikely appeal of Jell-O molds.
Johnson Community College has hosted its performing-arts series for 21 years, entertaining more than 500,000 visitors along the way. The Miles Davis Experience takes place at Yardley Hall, a medium-size theater known for its excellent acoustics, tasty concessions (not included in today's deal), and absence of dive-bombing pelicans. Guests who'd like to learn more about Davis's legacy or the meaning of the word supermurgitroid can enjoy a free 7 p.m. lecture by Greg Carroll, CEO of the American Jazz Museum.
