The Deal

  • $15 for one best-available regular ticket (up to $65 value)

The Program

Conductor Andrew Litton leads the Minnesota Orchestra through a pair of Romantic-era classics. Soloists include Nicola Benedetti on violin and Leonard Elschenbroich on cello.

  • Tchaikovsky—Symphony No. 4: Tchaikovsky does not mess around. Interspersed with uneasy silences, striking fortes rain down in the first movement, giving way to melancholy oboe in the second. By the fourth movement, a bolder mood is struck and the work begins to incorporate a famous Russian folk song, “In the Field Stood a Birch Tree.”

  • Brahms—Double Concerto for Violin and Cello: Written as an offering to reconcile with his old friend, violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms’ unconventional work eschews bombast in favor of a more playful melody.
