Before she was Israel’s first—and to date, only—female prime minister, Golda Meir was breaking down other political barriers in roles as Israel’s Minister of Labor, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Internal Affairs. Her political expertise, coupled with her dedication to her country, inspired playwright William Gibson to pen Gilda’s Balcony, a one-woman show that went on to become the longest-running play of its kind on Broadway. In it, a single actress (previous performers include Tovah Feldshuh and Valerie Harper) embodies not only Meir but 30 other characters such as Henry Kissinger, Richard Nixon, and the former Iraqi foreign minister. All in all, the play paints a rich and textured picture of international politics that the New York Daily News declares “riveting.”
