With names such as Joe Morgan, Reggie Jackson, and Rickey Henderson sprawled across their franchise timeline, the Modesto Nuts take the field in 2012 inspired by a Hall of Fame–worthy past. As a Class A–Advanced affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, the Nuts repeatedly rouse a devoted faction of fans by offering glimpses into baseball’s future, long before the team’s budding stars charge onto MLB dirt or grow too big to fit inside minor-league dugouts. Although this season’s roster has yet to be finalized, last summer’s squad saw the emergence of several key players, including shortstop Josh Rutledge and pitcher Chad Bettis, who established himself as the Rockies’ No. 4 prospect after earning the title of 2011 California League Pitcher of the Year.

John Thurman Field’s basepaths are easements of excitement as fresh faces introduce themselves to home crowds during the opening month of the season. Throughout the summer, weekly promotions help amplify the stadium’s already amped atmosphere with pregame rounds of catch on Sundays, discounted tacos on Tuesdays, and themed weekend games followed by fireworks shows and the subsequent shrieks from frightened birds passing above.

About Modesto Nuts

Since 1960, the city of Modesto has been the minor league home to six different big league franchises including the New York Yankees, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Oakland Athletics. But despite all the bouncing around, the Nuts have consistently won, and have captured five California League championships over the years. Now affiliated with the Colorado Rockies, the team is still looking for its first title under the Nuts moniker, which it officially adopted in 2005 as a nod to the region's farming products and any fans who try to catch foul balls in their mouths.
