The Scouting Report
For Nuts starting pitcher Daniel Winkler, the 2013 season has been one long showcase. Leading the league in wins and strikeouts through 21 starts, Winkler cemented himself in team history on June 24, when he tossed the first seven innings of a no-hitter against the San Jose Giants. That victory anchored a seven-game winning streak to start the season’s second half, and the Nuts have hardly slowed down—they're currently fighting with San Jose for first place in the North Division's second-half standings. With only a month to go in the regular season, the Nuts continue their pursuit of a playoff spot at John Thurman Field, where fans repay the team for its hard work and assorted promotions by using their collective breath to turn pop-flies into home runs.
Since 1960, the city of Modesto has been the minor league home to six different big league franchises including the New York Yankees, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Oakland Athletics. But despite all the bouncing around, the Nuts have consistently won, and have captured five California League championships over the years. Now affiliated with the Colorado Rockies, the team is still looking for its first title under the Nuts moniker, which it officially adopted in 2005 as a nod to the region's farming products and any fans who try to catch foul balls in their mouths.
