The Scouting Report

On the first Sunday of the New Year, two of the most-decorated soccer clubs of Liga MX (the top level of Mexican soccer) will face off at San Jose’s new Avaya Stadium as Monarcas Morelia takes on the Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles in an international exhibition match for Copa Nissan. This game marks the debut of Piojo Herrera, the most popular coach at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, at the helm of his new Tijuana team. Monarcas de Morelia, meanwhile, will enter the match with experience on its side: it was founded in the 1920s, back when it was really hard to see the ball since everything was in black and white. The friendly will cap off a Mexican soccer festival outside the stadium, where fans can prepare for kickoff with live music and interactive attractions.
