Art has often embraced the macabre, from the gory stage antics of Black Sabbath to the Cryptkeeper’s monologue at the start of every Shakespeare comedy. Listen to live rock till you’re stone dead with this GrouponLive deal to the Monster Jam Fest at the Majestic Ventura Theater. For $20, you get one ticket for general admission on Sunday, October 28 (up to a $42.88 value, including all fees). Music starts at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
At Monster Jam Fest, seven titanic hard-rock and heavy-metal bands splatter All Hallows’ Eve with musical menace. At the top of the bill, Texas heavy-metal supergroup Hellyeah scares the fillings out of fans with the ferocious tag team of vocalist Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett from Mudvayne and the drum-pounding malice of Pantera’s Vinnie Paul. Grammy-nominated nu-metal mavens P.O.D. slash open their feelings in ballads from their latest album, Murdered Love, and Dio’s Disciples keeps alive the pioneering music of late heavy metal icon Ronnie James Dio with an all-star lineup of rockers, including former Judas Priest singer Tim “Ripper” Owens, Yngwie Malmsteen bassist Bjorn Anglund, and Dio guitarist Craig Goldy.
Though each set may present a thick, impenetrable wall of sound, the lineup as a whole flashes with the diversity of several unique acts. Showcasing a new generation, the all-girl Cherri Bomb further tweaks the heavy template with head-banging odes to teenage rebellion leavened by hooks in the vein of Foo Fighters and the band that inspired their name, The Runaways. Pasadena’s throwback thrashers Holy Grail keep metals horns raised toward the heavens with lightning-fast solos, relentlessly thundering double-pedal, and power-metal vocals, as heard on their new single “Dark Passenger” from their upcoming album Ride the Void.
