The Scouting Report
On March 23, Mother State Roller Derby rumbles into a fresh season in front of an excited hometown crowd at Rollerdome. After a long winter of practicing and letting skates recover from wheel-replacement surgeries, the team will once again have the chance to defend its Richmond-based track against the Capitol Defenders of the DC Rollergirls. Both squads are members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s East Region—perhaps the WFTDA’s most storied region, which features 50 teams including squads from Canada and Europe.
Mother State Roller Derby
Virginia is known as the “Mother of All States,” but the women of Mother State Roller Derby don’t need to be moms themselves. They do, however, need to be tough, determined, and committed to the league’s cause of furthering women’s flat track roller derby as a competitive sport. The league was founded in 2010 with that mission in mind, and today, it features a trio of teams, including an all-star squad that competes at the sport’s highest level. For those unfamiliar with the sport, MSRD also maintains a training team, as well as a rookies team, where newcomers quickly learn the rules of the derby and that peppering the track with banana peels is most definitely frowned upon.
