Although the story may be familiar, Mulan becomes exquisitely new in the hands of The Red Poppy Ladies. Set 1,600 years ago, the drama’s backdrop is the Hunnish invasion of China. A conscription notice is sent out: every Chinese family must send one male member to join the fight against the aggressors. But because Mulan’s father had only daughters, the elderly and ailing man will have to head off to war, and likely to his demise. Unless Mulan comes up with something, that is. So she cuts her hair, grabs a sword, vows never to ask for directions again, and joins the army as a man. Soon her prowess in battle is respected across the land, and after her identity becomes revealed, her legend only grows.

To transform the tale into a spectacle, The Red Poppy Ladies combine pantomime with dance and projected narration. But their favored narrative instrument is percussion. The all-female ensemble drums on nearly everything within reach, conveying quiet moments and violent clashes alike with rhythm. And for its innovation, Mulan has long been beloved by New Yorkers and critics alike. As the New York Times’s Ken Jaworowski said in 2012, “the company proves itself skilled, with sharp timing and a graceful stage presence.”
