At a Gipsy Kings concert, there is no shortage of energy, or, for that matter, musicians. During each live performance, two bands of brothers, the Reyes and the Baliardos, pile onstage to work up the crowd with their signature “rumba gitano” sound. This happy marriage of rumba rhythms and furious-flamenco guitar strumming spans cultures and moves the crowd.
The group became an international sensation with its 1987 self-titled debut. Certified gold and platinum around the world, the album introduced millions to their fusion of Western pop and Latin rhythms. Since then, the members have toured almost non-stop to far-flung places around the world and sold nearly twenty million records—and have kept their lineup intact.
Hits such as “Bamboleo,” “Volare,” and popular interpretations of songs such as the Eagles’ “Hotel California” unite audiences into a throng of chorus shouters. But the Kings aren’t content to just play their older material. Fans can also expect cuts from 2013’s Savor Flamenco, which won a Grammy for Best World Music album.
