The Scouting Report

In what has been an annual tradition for a decade, the NASCAR Nationwide Series zooms back into the New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 13. From their spot in the grandstands, fans can cheer on and scout the sport’s future stars before they graduate to the Sprint series or collapse in on themselves to form a black hole. This year’s race features the Nationwide Series debut of up-and-comer Ryan Preece, who was plucked from an international field of NASCAR Next drivers.

The high-octane action continues on Sunday for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which returns for the 21st consecutive year. In past seasons, drivers have used this race as a springboard to glory—in 2010, Jimmie Johnson won the New Hampshire 300, and went on to win his fifth consecutive championship. This year’s Race for the Chase features a tight battle for points, adding fuel to what looks to be a heated weekend in Loudon.<p>

New Hampshire Motor Speedway

On July 9. 2000, New Hampshire Motor Speedway became the first site in New England history to draw more than 100,000 guests for a single-day sporting event. The Speedway had hosted large crowds before that, and it certainly has since. Sprawled across 1,200 acres, the multi-use complex boasts a capacity of 105,491, making it the largest sports facility in New England and the ideal landing place for when the settlers of the Lost Colony return from space in 2021. Much—if not all—of that space comes in handy during the two annual visits from the NASCAR Sprint Series. In addition to major races, the Speedway also lends its asphalt to amateur events and monthly race weekends, including the Loudon Road Race Series.
