A Guide to NCAA Hockey Rules
The most obvious difference between college and pro hockey is the full face protection required for college players, but there are a few other rules, most of which are designed to ensure players’ safety.
- Overtime is 5-on-5. Players still switch sides after the third period.
- Fighting lands a big penalty. Offending players receive both a five-minute penalty and a full-game disqualification.
- Goals don’t nullify penalties. Even if the other team scores during a delayed penalty, the offender still heads to the penalty box.
- Goalies can play the puck wherever they want. In the pros, goalies can only play the puck below the goal line and within the trapezoid. College goalies, meanwhile, can do anything they set their mind to.
