For its season finale, New Century Theatre puts on Jane Anderson’s funny, poignant, and tragic play, The Quality of Life, which collides cultures in search of the core principles that define humanity. Ohioans Dinah and Bill lean on conservative Christian values, and their Californian cousins, Jeannette and Neil, adopt an earthier, new-age philosophy, yet both couples find themselves faced with tragedy. A wildfire has destroyed Jeannette and Neil’s home, spurring Dinah and Bill to meet them in Berkeley––only to find their cousins have set up a makeshift yurt on the site of their former abode. The quartet’s vastly different worldviews lead inevitably to confrontation, but to surprising commiseration as well, for the Midwesterners have recently experienced every parent’s deepest fear: the death of their daughter. Over a weekend of honest debate and merciless self-reflection, all four manage to grow in unexpected ways, explore loss, and cope with the transient nature of life.
