The Scouting Report

A few wins can go a long way in the WNBA’s competitive Eastern Conference. And during a June 21 showdown on the road in Atlanta, the Liberty made a strong case for itself as a team that deserves to climb the standings. Four players scored in double figures that night, including rookie Brittany Boyd, who put up 18 points off the bench. In fact, the Liberty bench outscored Atlanta’s bench 34-13. Behind Tina Charles’s 100th career double-double, the starters came through too, creating a blueprint for future successes based on teamwork and depth rather than unplugging the scoreboard when things go wrong.

New York Liberty

The WNBA is led by a slate of premier athletes whose elite-level performance continues the league’s impressive legacy. This season, the New York Liberty is led by head coach Bill Laimbeer, formerly of the Detroit Pistons, and recently-signed 2012 WNBA MVP and Queens native Tina Charles. As the athletes face off, a bounty of fan entertainment keeps crowds energized, including Maddie, the Liberty’s furry mascot. Elevating the family-friendly atmosphere of the games is the Lil’ Torches, a team of dancers aged 14 and younger, and the 40-and-older dance team known as the Timeless Torches, which was featured in the sixth season of 30 Rock.
