The play, it must be said, is not very good. Not Noises Off—but rather, Nothing’s On, a fictional British sex farce invented by playwright Michael Frayn for the hapless theatrical types of Noises Off to perform. It has constantly slamming doors. It has a subplot about tax evasion. Its staging requires quantities of sardines.
Its questionable quality doesn’t keep the farce from influencing its actors’ lives, however. As we watch a cast of dimwits, stutterers, and capital-A actors rehearse and then perform, their personal relationships become more and more absurdly intertwined until it’s hard to tell who’s in character and who’s not.
The play instantly joined the ranks of classic comedies upon its 1982 debut. The New York Times’ Frank Rich, among others, appreciated the way it took a “basic premise . . . just possibly to its most dizzying comic heights yet,” demonstrating ”the kind of bravura skill one associates with such other British playwrights as Tom Stoppard and Alan Ayckbourn at peak form.”

About Community Theatre of Howell
The Community Theatre of Howell has been a reliable source of laughter, tears, wit, and wisdom since 1985. From meditative political dramas such as The Lion in Winter (their first show) to sensory extravaganzas such as The Wizard of Oz, performed in full color, the company aims for accessibility and range. With the addition of a youth-oriented theatrical education program, they've begun to add a bevy of new classics to their repertoire, with more recent seasons featuring the likes of The Wedding Singer and Schoolhouse Rock Jr.
