The Scouting Report
As the season rolls on, the Admirals continue to evolve. Just this month the team signed rookie Ryan Salkeld, a Hampton Roads native who finished his college career as a top-10 all-time scorer at Buffalo State College. Salkeld should help invigorate the offense as the Admirals skate into the season’s final stretch, which includes a trio of conference showdowns in early April. On April 6, the team will face-off against Greenville, from whom they’ve claimed points in three of four games this season. A couple days later, the season will conclude with back-to-back matchups against South Carolina before Scope Arena’s rink gets broken down and placed inside a big cooler until next year.
The Norfolk Admirals played 12 seasons in the ECHL as the Bakersfield Condors before relocating to Virginia and inheriting the moniker of a former Norfolk AHL team. Back in Bakersfield, the franchise made eight playoff appearances in 12 seasons, including consecutive trips to the conference finals in '06 and '07. The team hopes to take it one step further in Norfolk, aiming to take home a first-ever Kelly Cup for the team and convincing the mayor to turn it into a fountain downtown.
