Set to Prokofiev’s sweeping score, Northwest Florida Ballet’s rendition of Romeo & Juliet tragically pirouettes through the doomed romance of Shakespeare’s young couple, who find themselves caught in an age-old feud between their two families, the Montagues and the Capulets. “Intimate moments of lyrical beauty between the star-crossed lovers are interwoven with action-packed encounters,” says artistic director and choreographer Todd Eric Allen, whether it be the famed bottle-rocket fight between Mercutio and Tybalt or the tender balcony scene between the titular lovebirds. During rehearsals, Allen also rubbed pointe shoes with his mentor, Bernadette Sims, who founded Northwest Florida Ballet and fills the role of Juliet’s boisterous yet caring nurse.
Intent on opening a space for quality dance performances, apprentice dancers, and community art appreciation, Sims created Northwest Florida Ballet in 1969. Over the past 40 years, the group has sashayed alongside the Atlantic Ballet and Miami City Ballet, gracing the stage with dance-driven versions of classic literature, student concerts, and famous Stanley Cup championships.
