Set in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1830s, La Bohème opens by introducing a group of young philosophers, musicians, and other bohemians who dodge their landlords to go out drinking. On Christmas Eve, however, Rodolfo remains in his unheated apartment, where he first meets his neighbor Mimi: a young seamstress looking for a candle for warmth. Inviting her in, Rodolfo helplessly falls in love and into song, belting out “Che Gelida Manina” under the pretext of warming her hands and discerning whether she’s a snow-person in disguise. But love alone can’t fix their poverty or the illness Mimi develops, and Rodolfo comes to feel that his only way to help Mimi is to let her go.
Puccini’s lush, romantic score and the story’s tragic twists have compelled generations of audiences—and other artists . Jonathan Larson used the plot as the basis for his Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent (albeit with a much cheerier ending), and its influence is found throughout Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge!
In This Production: Accompanied by the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, soloists Leslie Ann Bradley (Mimi), Brian Cheney (Rodolfo), Amelia Watkins (Musetta), and Wes Mason (Marcello) join members of the Fairfield County Chorale, Fairfield County Children’s Chorale, and the Norwalk Community College Chorus.
