The Nutcracker 1776
The Nutcracker 1776 weaves the Founding Fathers into the classic tale of holiday adventure. It begins in a Colonial-era tavern, when innocent young Abby receives a nutcracker from jolly old inventor Benjamin Franklin. After everyone else is fast asleep, Abby sneaks out of bed to peek at her new toy and suddenly finds herself in the midst of a battle—the redcoat-clad General Mouse Howe has her beloved at his mercy. But when Abby topples the monarch for good, the Nutcracker takes her on a tour of the Land of Snow and the Land of Sweets.
Throughout their adventures, Tchaikovsky’s dazzling inventiveness propels the dances of nimble flowers and regal fairy queens. The “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy” tiptoes to the music-box chimes of a celesta, while a medley of national dances—including a Spanish bolero and Russian Trepak—add to the phantasmagoric celebration before the whole dream ends, as all dreams must.
