Tchaikovsky’s time-honored score rings out across the balconies of Desert Vista Fine Arts Theatre as a cast composed of 125 young dancers brings The Nutcracker to life against a background of falling snow, pirouetting angels, and a Christmas tree that sprouts through the theater’s roof. Audience members of all ages grip armrests tightly as they embark on a magical journey with Clara, a girl whose affinity for well-defined jawlines leads her to adore a nutcracker whose wooden joints conceal the nimble prince who lies within. As night descends on the stage, the plot grows thick with intrigue, grand jetés, and gargantuan Christmas trees. Dancers as young as 3 and as old as 21 whirl and twirl across the stage as the first act reaches its climax in a harrowing battle with the Rat King and his legions of mice. The whisker-studded stage gives way to a second act that sweeps the protagonists away into a land where snow falls like powdered sugar on gumdrop mountains and the Sugar Plum Fairy rules with an iron slipper.
Audience members watching from left, right, or center balcony have first dibs on the snow that falls from the ceiling. Following Saturday’s matinee performance, cast members will sign autographs alongside Santa Claus onstage and kids will get the chance to feel the plush cotton-candy padding of Clara’s throne in the Land of the Sweets.
