The Syracuse City Ballet’s troupe of talented local dancers artfully arcs and twirls through performances of family-friendly tales. In the holiday performance of A Children’s Nutcracker, the troupe vivifies the beloved holiday favorite, aiming to engage youthful audiences who might otherwise know ballet only as a tactic in street-fighting video games. The Syracuse New Times hailed last year’s performance as “thoroughly engaging and smartly comedic.” A stageful of talented youths and professional dancers recreates the magical hours when young Clara’s Christmas toys come alive, with tiny mice pirouetting across the stage and a blustering Rat King caught in a giant mouse trap. Both Saturday performances also invite families to a preshow Sugar Plum Social at which to hobnob with Santa, costumed members of the cast, and gingerbread-house construction workers.
Syracuse City Ballet
Headed by Juilliard-trained dancer and former Princeton Ballet Society of New Jersey soloist Kathleen Rathbun, Syracuse City Ballet enriches the cultural soil of central New York with professional ballet performances and top-flight training. During each season, the company stages stalwarts of the classical repertoire. Students might don their slippers to animate Cinderella or Swan Lake, but a yearly Nutcracker production rings in the holiday season regardless.
