Play adapted from an 18th-century French comedy follows two aristocrats who dress as servants to peg each other before agreeing to marriage
Live theatre tends to be more thrilling than film, largely due to the heightened odds of seeing someone flub a line or deliver a stirring monologue while sitting in your lap. Vicariously live the free-wheeling thespian life with this deal to see The Game of Love and Chance presented by Odyssey Theatre outdoors in Strathcona Park. For $24, you get two tickets for general admission to the bleachers (up to a $48 value). All shows begin at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7:30 p.m.; and box office opens at 7 p.m. Choose from the following dates:
- Tuesday, July 31
- Tuesday, August 7
- Tuesday, August 14
- Tuesday, August 21<p>
Celebrating more than a quarter century of outdoor theatre in Strathcona Park, Odyssey Theatre explores human existence through masks, intense physicality, and vibrant costuming, as well as by weaving text with music, dance, and fairground arts. Originally penned by Enlightenment playwright Pierre de Marivaux, The Game of Love and Chance weaves a madcap tale of mistaken identity and forbidden love. Transposed to France’s La Belle Époque by director Andy Massingham, the stage presents two young aristocrats who have not yet met but are engaged to be married as they both—unbeknownst to one another—switch identities with their servants to learn of their betrothed’s character. Disguised as nobles, the servants tickle ribs with over-the-top impersonations of genteel behaviour while the engaged aristocrats struggle with their feelings as they grow closer, each believing they have fallen in love with a commoner. There is limited space available for lawn chairs at each show, and light snacks and refreshments are available for purchase or juggling.
