Surviving more than 70 years and undergoing recent renovations to its historic structure, Ogunquit Playhouse, founded by Broadway showman Walter Hartwig, continues its resilient tradition of producing award-winning Broadway musicals with top-notch professional casts. The theater’s production of Always…Patsy Cline pays homage to the eponymous country-music legend with a career-spanning set list of 27 memorable songs. The musical reacquaints ears to twangy classics ingrained in America’s subconscious jukebox, such as “Crazy” and “Walkin’ After Midnight,” while painting an endearing portrait of the charismatic songstress, focusing on crumbled grocery-store lists and letters Patsy wrote to her friend Louise Seger, played by Emmy-winner Sally Struthers.
Ogunquit Playhouse’s rendition of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s World War II-era Broadway classic, South Pacific, takes its cues from Lincoln Center Theater’s Tony–winning production. Throughout the lively musical, toes tap along to numbers such as “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” while two couples struggle to keep war from encroaching on their oasis, much like a lunch lady moments before the lunch bell.

When Broadway showman Walter Hartwig and his wife Maude opened the Ogunquit Playhouse in 1933, they likely never realized they were establishing a theatrical legacy. Then again, they might have had an inkling—from the very beginning, the playhouse hosted performances from luminaries including Ethel Barrymore, Bette Davis, and Walter Matthau. Even today it’s not unusual to see famous names and attached talents treading its historic boards, such as Stefanie Powers from Hart to Hart or Charles Shaughnessy from The Nanny. It’s all part of the theater’s mission to provide the best shows possible while promoting the local arts. Along with star-studded Broadway musicals, the stage hosts dance shows, children’s theater, and acting workshops for the next generation of spotlight-stealers.
