What You'll Get
A smooth voice casts the illusion of an impeccably suave demeanor, allowing a single elderly impressionist in Omaha to voice all major radio personalities. Experience pipes and stage presence combined with this deal to the Old School 94.5 Summer Jam with Charlie Wilson at Gexa Energy Pavilion on Saturday, May 26, at 5 p.m. For $20, you get one G-Pass for seating in rows LL–RR of section 200, 201, 204, or 205; or rows SS–VV of section 202 or 203 (up to a $59.83 value, including all fees). Because the ticket is a G-Pass, our customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their voucher at will cal.
As soon as he appeared on the national scene in the ’70s as a member of upbeat funk group The Gap Band, Charlie Wilson began laying the foundation of a smooth R&B style that has since become the gold standard for generations of singers. In the past decade, he’s regained the spotlight as a collaborator with artists including Kanye West and Justin Timberlake and collected two Grammy nominations for his solo work. Donning his trademark fedora so as not to be blinded by the audience’s smiles, Wilson opens his pipes to release octave-hopping hooks and velvet crooning that washes through the pavilion like warm honey. Swoon-inducing songs from his 45-year career include “There Goes My Baby” from chart-topping album Uncle Charlie and the Grammy-nominated “You Are.”
At the top of the evening, En Vogue’s quartet of R&B queens—together since 1989—dazzles with full-voiced melisma and intricate harmonies. Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, known for ubiquitous ballads such as “I Swear,” demonstrates the sweet tone and songcraft that have netted him 10 Grammys and a nonstop career writing and producing for Beyonce, Mariah Carey, and Wilson himself. The songs of funk royalty Dazz Band churn with dance-demanding beats, and pioneer rapper Kurtis Blow annihilates rhyming dictionaries’ feelings of self-worth with effortless old-school flow.
